The best project management and team task tracking software
Tools where a team plans work, assigns it, tracks status across boards or timelines, and sees what is blocked or late.
What has to be true to appear here
- Assignable work items with status, owner and due date
- At least two views of the same data, such as board and timeline
- Permissions that can restrict a project to a subset of the workspace
- Full export including comments and history
Inclusion is not for sale, and neither is order. Nine of the products we cover have no affiliate programme at all.
What every product here was put through
- 1.Model a 400-task programme with dependencies across four teams; change one date and measure what the tool correctly cascades
- 2.Invite a contractor with restricted access and attempt to reach a project they should not see, by search, by link and by notification
- 3.Measure load time on a 2,000-item board, cold, on a mid-range laptop
- 4.Export the workspace and check whether comments, attachments and history survive

Real questions
What buyers actually ask
Why do these all look the same?
Because the feature set converged years ago. The differences we could actually measure were performance at scale, whether dependency changes cascade correctly, and whether guest permissions hold, and those varied enormously. One product silently failed to cascade a date change across a team boundary.
Why this page has no winner badge
“Best overall” is a question about your situation, not about the software. The table gives you a tested score, a real price at your team size, and a one-line statement of who each product is wrong for. The last of those is usually the one that decides it.

Pricing moves constantly in this category and we miss things. Send a correction with a dated link and it goes in the public log, with your handle on it if you want it there.
