The best helpdesk and customer support ticketing software
Shared inbox and ticketing systems where a support team receives, assigns, tracks and answers customer conversations across email, chat and other channels.
What has to be true to appear here
- Shared queue with assignment, status and a full conversation history
- At least two channels, one of which is email
- Reporting on response and resolution time that a customer can export
- Documented data retention and deletion behaviour
Inclusion is not for sale, and neither is order. Nine of the products we cover have no affiliate programme at all.
What every product here was put through
- 1.Run 2,000 conversations across email and chat through a four-person rota; measure collision rate, misassignment and lost threads
- 2.Break the email connection mid-shift and record what the tool tells the team and what happens to inbound mail
- 3.Reconcile the product's own resolution-time reporting against our timestamps on the same 2,000 conversations
- 4.Delete a customer's data on request and verify it is gone from search, exports and reporting

Real questions
What buyers actually ask
Do the reporting numbers mean anything?
Check the definition of 'resolved' before you trust a dashboard. One product counted a conversation resolved when an agent clicked close, even if the customer replied afterwards and reopened it, which flattered its median resolution time by about 40 percent against our own timestamps.
Should I buy a helpdesk or an AI support agent?
A helpdesk first, always. The AI agent sits on top of your ticket history and documentation, so it is only as good as what the helpdesk has accumulated. Buying the agent first means pointing it at nothing.
Why this page has no winner badge
“Best overall” is a question about your situation, not about the software. The table gives you a tested score, a real price at your team size, and a one-line statement of who each product is wrong for. The last of those is usually the one that decides it.
Found something out of date?
Pricing moves constantly in this category and we miss things. Send a correction with a dated link and it goes in the public log, with your handle on it if you want it there.
